Messi suffers facial injury in Argentina’s win over Switzerland
Argentina captain Lionel Messi suffered a cut above his eye during his team's 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal match against Switzerland.
The injury occurred following a collision with Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka. Medical staff treated Messi on the touchline during a cooling break, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Despite the incident, Argentina secured a 3-1 victory after extra time to advance to the semifinals.
Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring in the 10th minute, before Dan Ndoye equalized in the 67th minute.
Argentina sealed the win in extra time through goals from Julián Álvarez in the 112th minute and Lautaro Martínez in the 120th minute.
Switzerland were reduced to 10 men in the 70th minute when Breel Embolo received his second yellow card and was sent off.
