New multimodal corridor boosts China–Central Asia–Azerbaijan trade links
A ceremony was held in the Chinese city of Kashgar to mark the official launch of cargo transportation along the new China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan–Turkmenistan multimodal route.
The initiative represents a significant step in enhancing the transit potential of the Middle Corridor and is intended to diversify the existing Central Asia–China and China–Europe transportation routes. The newly launched route is also seen as an important component in advancing regional connectivity under China’s Belt and Road Initiative, Caliber.Az reports, citing Uzbek media.
On October 15, seven cargo vehicles set off from Kashgar, beginning their journey across the multimodal corridor. According to the transport schedule, the convoy is expected to reach Uzbekistan on October 21 and Turkmenistan by October 24. Portions of the cargo will subsequently be delivered onward to Azerbaijan, extending the corridor’s reach across the Caspian Sea.
Speaking at the event, Cai Tuanjie, Director of the Transport Services Department of China's Ministry of Transport, underscored the strategic importance of the route. He emphasized that the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan–Turkmenistan corridor reflects the shared commitment of Central Asian nations and China to deepening regional cooperation.
“This transport corridor will positively influence the economic development of all participating countries, boost mutual cargo exchanges, and facilitate the broader implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative,” Cai noted. He also highlighted that the route not only provides access to European markets but also opens vital trade pathways to South Asia and the Middle East.
