Mike Waltz сonfirms productive Trump-Putin call, world leaders express hope for Ukraine peace
US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz commented on the recent scheduled phone conversation held between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, refuting claims that the call started with a delay.
Waltz dismissed these speculations during an interview with Fox News and confirmed that the exchange lasted for an extended period of time on March 18, Caliber.Az reports.
According to him, the two presidents discussed numerous issues, including the future of US-Russia relations and the resolution of the Ukraine crisis.
Waltz added that the conversation also touched on operational details of the conflict and the broader vision for implementing a ceasefire agreement. “They covered a wide range of topics, and I can assure you that President Trump does not wait for any world leader for an hour,” he noted.
The high-profile phone call is of immense political importance to the international community and has thus captured the attention of world leaders. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen commented on the talks by calling them a potential step forward in achieving peace in Ukraine.
Writing on X (formerly Twitter), she stated, “A comprehensive, just, and lasting peace for Ukraine must be the outcome of this devastating war. We hope that yesterday’s phone call represents progress in that direction.” She reaffirmed that the European Union remains committed to supporting Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed optimism that the phone conversation between Putin and Trump marked the first step toward implementing agreements previously reached in Jeddah during the first direct contact between US and Russian diplomats in recent times.
Speaking before the Italian Parliament on March 18, Meloni highlighted that a proposed partial ceasefire — focused on protecting strategically significant infrastructure, particularly beneficial to Ukraine — could be a starting point for further negotiations.
She reiterated that her government fully supports the peace initiatives led by the Trump administration.
