Minister: Türkiye’s economy grows strongly in recent years

23 May 2023 12:38

Türkiye’s Minister of Treasury and Finance Nureddin Nebati has said that the Turkish economy showed one of its best growth rates in 2022 for the first time in 20 years.

He made the remarks on his Twitter account, Anadolu reports.

According to him, the Turkish economy has shown significant growth in recent years compared to many of the world's leading countries.

The minister said that in the run-up to the election, the opposition, as well as their patrons abroad, were making unsubstantiated claims about Türkiye's economic performance in order to put pressure on voters.

Nebati stressed that opposition forces are trying to convince citizens that the Turkish economy will be in dire straits after the re-election of incumbent leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The minister recalled that even during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Türkiye continued to show growth in economic indicators while the GDP of other countries declined rapidly.

"Türkiye's economy grew 11.4 per cent in 2021. Despite the outbreak of war between Russia and Ukraine, which shook the entire world order, the economy grew by 5.6 per cent in 2022. Compared with other world powers, our economy has grown significantly. In addition, there are massive job cuts around the world today, but employment in Türkiye is growing steadily. Thanks to the policy we are implementing, the number of employed citizens increased by 1.5 million in March 2023, bringing the total number of employed people to 31.5 million," Nebati wrote.

The minister recalled that in February this year, Türkiye experienced two devastating earthquakes that caused massive destruction in 11 provinces of the country.

Despite this, industrial production growth in the first quarter of 2023 was 0.4 per cent, Nebati added.

"Even this figure is a testament to how strong the foundation of our economy is. If an earthquake of this magnitude had struck any European country, could they have achieved a similar economic performance? The incumbent authorities in Türkiye, under the leadership of Mr President, are the force that gave our country the giant urban hospitals equipped with the latest technology, modern UAVs, combat aircraft, TOGG vehicles, satellites, Black Sea natural gas, TCG Anadolu, Akkuyu NPP [nuclear power plant] and many other projects that will remain for centuries. The Turkish people will once again take a clear stance in favour of stability, independence, for a strong and great Türkiye thanks to their foresight and faith," he wrote.
