Moscow vows "sensitive" retaliation to US sanctions against Russian media
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has said that Moscow's response to Washington's sanctions against Russian journalists will be “sensitive”.
She made the remarks on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
According to the diplomat, the US authorities have not published all the restrictions adopted against Russian media. Zakharova called this situation “cheating.”
“Part of the lists was never cited. Apparently, because they realize that we will respond. Perhaps they do not want to reveal themselves in their entirety, so as not to get “retaliation”. As you know, the “response” was now to the actions of the European Commission, and one that turned out to be sensitive. We have banned more than 80 of our three publications,” the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.
On September 4, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions against the Rossiya Segodnya, RIA Novosti, Russia Today (RT), Sputnik and Ruptly media groups. The Finance Ministry also banned the transmission of telecommunications data without authorization to Channel One, Russia 1 and NTV, a total of 10 individuals and two legal entities. The new sanctions affected Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of the Rossiya Segodnya news agency and RT, and several top managers of the TV channel.
