NATO launches Eastern Sentry initiative to bolster defence of eastern flank
In response to recent drone violations of Polish airspace, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has announced the launch of the Eastern Sentry initiative, a strategic program designed to reinforce the alliance’s eastern flank and deter further Russian provocations.
Following the incursion involving at least 19 Russian drones earlier this week, the NATO chief underscored the alliance’s unwavering support for Poland, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
“We see drones violating our airspace. Whether it was intentional or not, it is unacceptable. The allies have expressed full solidarity with Poland. It is crucial to counter aggression and defend every member of the Alliance,” Rutte stated during a press briefing.
Emphasizing the critical importance of safeguarding NATO’s eastern borders, Rutte added, “The defence of the eastern flank is our key task. That is why we are launching the Eastern Sentry initiative to further strengthen our eastern flank.”
The new program will engage multiple NATO member states, deploying advanced capabilities specifically aimed at countering the growing threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles, and enhancing rapid response readiness across the region.
In a parallel development, US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth—who previously lauded Poland as “an exemplary NATO ally”—held talks with Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. The Polish official reassured the public on the social media platform X that “Poland could count on the full support of the US,” reinforcing the strong transatlantic partnership underpinning NATO’s collective security efforts.
