Netblocks: Iran enters 81st day of internet shutdown
19 May 2026 14:17
Iran entered its 81st consecutive day of internet disruption on May 19, with the outage now lasting more than 1,920 hours, according to NetBlocks.
It said the regime is attempting to extend its digital chokehold internationally, demanding control over other countries' cables in the Strait of Hormuz and big tech compliance with Islamic Republic laws.
Authorities link the measures to security concerns.
However, last week, Elyas Hazrati, head of Iran’s Government Information Council, stated that Tehran’s policy was to expand access to the global internet and gradually move toward lifting online restrictions.
