Palestine seeks full UN membership despite US opposition
Advisor to the Palestinian president Mahmoud al-Habbash has said that Palestine intends to continue its pursuit of full membership status in the United Nations (UN) as an independent country, despite the US objectives.
“Palestine will also seek recognition of its statehood from several European countries,” al-Habbash noted, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
On May 10, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution that expands Palestine's rights within the organisation and recommends the Security Council reconsider the country's application for UN membership.
A total of 143 countries voted in favour of the resolution, nine opposed it, and 25 abstained.
Currently, Palestine holds an observer status in the UN.
On September 18, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution demanding that Israel must withdraw from Palestinian territory.
Israel has been required to comply with the International Court of Justice's ruling regarding the occupied Palestinian territories and to withdraw from them. The resolution stipulates that Israel must leave Palestine no later than one year from the date the document was approved.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated during a BRICS summit meeting that the conflict must be resolved in the Middle East through universally recognised global principles and there must be independent Palestine.
