Poland to transfer MiG-29s to Ukraine only after F-35s arrival Minister says
Polish Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz acknowledged President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's request for Polish MiG-29 fighter jets but stated that the transfer will only occur after Poland acquires modern replacements, such as the F-35s from the United States.
Kosiniak-Kamysz expressed an understanding of Ukraine's needs but emphasized that Poland’s priority is maintaining its own defence capabilities, Caliber.Az reports via Polish media.
“While I recognize Ukraine’s urgent need for weapons, we must also ensure that Poland's defense capabilities are preserved,” he said.
The minister clarified that decisions regarding the MiG-29s will be made only after the Polish Air Force receives the new F-35s.
“We need to have the new aircraft in place before we can decommission the MiG-29s, which are currently essential for protecting Polish airspace,” he added.
In July, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk had indicated that Poland might consider transferring additional Soviet-era fighter jets to Ukraine, contingent on securing suitable replacements.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy reiterated his appeal for Poland to provide its Soviet-made fighter jets during a press conference on August 27.
