Political analyst: Armenia should not expect much from EU

05 February 2024 16:50

Armenian political analyst Benyamin Poghosyan said that Armenia should not expect much from the EU.

“If earlier Armenia was perceived as a country completely under Russian influence, but with which the EU can have some relations, including signing an agreement on a comprehensive and enhanced Armenia-EU partnership, based on various considerations, now Armenia is perceived as a country that is trying to reduce its dependence on Russia,” Poghosyan said in an interview with the Armenian media, Caliber.Az reports.

“In this issue, the EU announced its readiness to help Armenia reduce its dependence on Russia. This certainly could have happened if the US presidential elections had not been scheduled for November 2024 and whether the US policy towards Russia will change or not depends on the outcome of these elections. There are some forecasts that if Donald Trump is elected, policy towards Russia will change. In this case, the EU is unlikely to be ready to continue the war against Russia, and in this case, the EU’s perception of relations with Armenia will change. Therefore, Armenia should not expect much from the relations with the EU, but it is worth comparing the facts and perceptions existing in the EU regarding the South Caucasus. Proceeding from the public and non-public statements made by EU officials, the EU does not intend to take someone else’s place in the South Caucasus,” he added.
