Armenia, Azerbaijan peace accord takes shape as PM Pashinyan updates EU top official

12 August 2025 13:12

Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan held a telephone conversation with President of the European Council António Costa to discuss the latest developments in the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process.

During the call, Prime Minister Pashinyan informed President Costa of the outcomes of the negotiations held on August 8, 2025, in Washington, DC. Notably, the talks resulted in the initialing of the agreement on the establishment of peace and inter-state relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Prime Minister’s press secretary, Nazeli Baghdasaryan, published on her official Facebook page, Caliber.Az reports.

Pashinyan highlighted several key elements of the evolving peace framework. Among them was a joint Armenian-Azerbaijani appeal to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) concerning the dissolution of the long-standing Minsk Group mechanisms, signaling a formal step away from the OSCE’s role in mediating the conflict.

The Prime Minister also underscored mutual commitments to unblocking regional communications based on the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty, and national jurisdiction — all to be implemented reciprocally. These developments mark a significant stride toward normalizing bilateral ties and fostering stability in the South Caucasus.

Pashinyan additionally referenced the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity initiative, a US-supported framework that aims to bolster post-conflict development and diplomatic normalization across historically volatile regions.

Emphasizing the broader geopolitical implications of the peace agreement, Pashinyan stated that the establishment of lasting peace would pave the way for increased European investment and deeper Armenia-EU cooperation. He noted that a stable and secure environment could serve as a catalyst for expanded economic partnerships.

The conversation also touched on various items on the Armenia-EU agenda, including preparations for the upcoming European Political Community (EPC) Summit, which is set to be hosted in Armenia in the spring of 2026.
