Political party leader urges Spain to exit NATO, close US military bases
Secretary General of the Spanish Podemos political party Ione Belarra has called on Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to take bold steps by withdrawing Spain from NATO and shutting down US military bases on Spanish soil.
Her comments came during the Fourth European Peace Conference, organized by Podemos in collaboration with various European and international political parties and social movements, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
In her speech, Belarra urged the Spanish government to act decisively, stating, "Let the prime minister remove US military bases from our territory and propose collective European control over the nuclear arsenal in Europe, until we achieve full global denuclearisation." Belarra’s remarks come in response to what she sees as NATO’s increasing alignment with the political and economic interests of the US.
She said that the alliance under President Donald Trump posed significant risks to Europe, claiming that NATO only defends the political and economic interests of the US. She expressed concern that these actions have worsened the security situation on the continent, with Europe becoming increasingly vulnerable.
Highlighting what she perceives as an "existential threat" facing Europe, Belarra emphasised that Spain must act urgently to protect its sovereignty and secure a more peaceful future for the continent. In light of this, she reiterated her call for Spain to leave NATO, signaling a significant shift in the political landscape and raising new questions about Spain's role in global security moving forward.
