President Erdogan supports idea of treating wounded Ukrainian soldiers in Türkiye
Turkish Ombudsman Seref Malkoc has proposed to open a humanitarian corridor for the transportation of wounded Ukrainian soldiers for medical treatment in Türkiye.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan supported this proposal, according to Milliyet.
He also expressed readiness to treat the wounded during other military conflicts in Syria, Azerbaijan, and Libya.
“Seref Malkoc proposed to open a corridor, especially for the wounded. We stand for this. We bring the wounded to hospitals not only from Russia, and Ukraine but also from Syria, Azerbaijan, and Libya, treat and return them. We will continue doing this in the future,” President Erdogan told reporters after the ombudsmen's press conference in Ankara on “The Future of Human Rights in the 21st Century”.
Earlier the information went viral that more than 70 ombudsmen and human rights activists from 41 countries will attend the conference.
The negotiations between Russian ombudswoman Tatyana Moskalkova and Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets are expected to be held through Ankara’s mediation on January 12. Lubinets expressed hope that the problems with the detained prisoners of war would be resolved thanks to the meeting.
Moskalkova and Lubinets have recently discussed the issues of rendering humanitarian assistance to Russian and Ukrainian citizens.
Türkiye proposed to create a “medical corridor” in Ukraine for the evacuation of the wounded in May 2022. The captured Ukrainian commanders from the Azovstal Iron and Steel Works were transported to Türkiye in September 2022. The Ukrainian commanders are there upon President Erdogan’s personal guarantees.
