Azerbaijan’s Qarabağ have secured their second consecutive win in the UEFA Champions League group stage, defeating Denmark’s Copenhagen 2:0 at the Tofig Bahramov Republican Stadium in Baku.
The home side opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Abdellah Zoubir capitalised on a rebound after Pedro Bicalho’s shot struck the post. Qarabağ doubled their lead late in the second half as Emmanuel Addai fired a powerful long-range strike into the corner of the net in the 83rd minute.
The victory leaves Qarabağ with six points from two matches, following their dramatic 3:2 away win over Benfica in Portugal in the opening round. Gurban Gurbanov’s men are now among the leaders of their group and have made a strong statement in their Champions League campaign.
Copenhagen, who drew 2:2 at home against Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen in their first match, were unable to respond to Qarabağ’s intensity in Baku.
Qarabağ will play their next group stage fixture away to Spain’s Athletic Bilbao on 22 October.
