Quality of life - key ingredient in Singapore's success

12 October 2024 09:09

Singapore has recently emerged as a beacon of longevity and quality of life, with its citizens enjoying remarkable health outcomes and increasing life expectancy, BBC highlights.

When it comes to longevity, few places in the world have experienced as remarkable an increase in life expectancy as Singapore, a city-state in Southeast Asia. A child born in Singapore in 1960 could expect to live to only 65, while today’s children are estimated to live beyond 86. Additionally, the number of centenarians in the country doubled between 2010 and 2020.

This significant rise in life expectancy can be attributed largely to deliberate government policies and investments. In August 2023, Singapore was recognized as the world's sixth "Blue Zone." Although some demographers have questioned the accuracy of the Blue Zones concept, which was popularized by National Geographic journalist Dan Buettner, these regions are identified as places where people enjoy longer, healthier lives due to a mix of culture, lifestyle, diet, and community. Singapore is unique as it is the first new region to be added to the Blue Zones in decades, referred to as "Blue Zone 2.0" by Buettner.

Unlike other Blue Zone areas like Ikaria, Greece, or Nicoya, Costa Rica, where longevity is rooted in longstanding cultural traditions, Singapore's extended lifespan stems from innovative policies. However, it’s not just about living longer; residents also value the quality of life. Conversations with locals reveal the impact of government initiatives on health and well-being.

Firdaus Syazwani, a resident and financial blogger, remarked, "Having grown up here, I've witnessed the shift in community health awareness. The high taxes on cigarettes and alcohol, along with strict public smoking bans, not only benefit individual health but also make public spaces cleaner and more inviting—no more secondhand smoke!" While surprised by the Blue Zone classification due to the high sugar, salt, and coconut milk content in local dishes, he noted that changes are gradually occurring.

"Given our cuisine’s rich ingredients, the Health Promotion Board has initiatives to promote healthier eating. Policies like mandatory nutritional labeling and reducing sugar in drinks have significantly raised public awareness and influenced choices. Although it’s still unclear how effective these measures are, I find myself avoiding sugary drinks when I see those labels." Singapore's healthcare system has garnered international praise for its high-quality care and ability to manage costs effectively. According to the 2023 Legatum Prosperity Index, the country ranks first globally in terms of citizens' health and healthcare accessibility.

It provides universal healthcare coverage while also incorporating private services and savings funds to help with out-of-pocket expenses. However, healthcare is just one factor contributing to the longevity of Singapore's residents. Robust public transportation promotes walking and daily exercise, while efforts to maintain a clean and attractive environment enhance residents' sense of security and well-being.

"Government initiatives that seamlessly integrate parks, gardens, and nature reserves into the urban landscape have given Singapore the nickname 'garden city,'" noted Charu Kokate, a senior partner at Safdie Architects, who has led projects like the Sky Habitat Residential Towers and Jewel Changi Airport. "After living in Singapore for over 15 years, I'm continually impressed by the meticulous planning of the Urban Development Authority. Their commitment to sustainability, efficient land use, and green spaces in urban life is remarkable.

While Singapore has strict regulations, these have resulted in a clean and well-maintained environment." One of her favorite spots is the Singapore Botanic Gardens, the only tropical garden designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. "Its impressive orchid collection and emphasis on plant research and conservation make it a sanctuary for nature lovers, families, and tourists seeking tranquility and beauty," she said. Public parks also foster community engagement, which longevity researchers agree is vital for a healthy life.

"From young adults to seniors, a diverse demographic participates in regular exercise, supported by numerous public parks, fitness corners, and accessible gym classes throughout the city," added Syazwani.

For those considering relocating, embracing the community spirit and lifestyle is crucial. He recommends East Coast Park, a beach area with ample picnic spots and walking paths to enjoy the sea breeze.

While the quality of life in Singapore is high, the cost of living reflects this. The country frequently ranks among the most expensive places to live, with Mercer placing it second only to Hong Kong. Despite its diverse population, with residents from around the globe, the government emphasizes social cohesion, reinforced through strict laws and regulations.

There are severe penalties for littering, public smoking, drug offenses, and even jaywalking, but many residents believe these measures contribute to a safer and more aesthetically pleasing living environment.

"The government's policies are strategically designed to meet the population's needs, prioritizing enhancements in overall quality of life, economic stability, and social harmony," stated Kokate.

"Singapore's political stability is crucial in creating an environment that attracts business investment, drives economic growth, and fosters social cohesion." Additionally, the country proudly showcases its diversity, particularly through its renowned culinary scene and annual festivals, which include celebrations like Chinese New Year, Deepavali (Diwali), and the International Festival of the Arts. "The city offers something for everyone, regardless of age," Kokate noted. "Its multicultural society embraces a variety of traditions, resulting in a rich and vibrant cultural experience that enriches the experience for both visitors and expatriates."
