Reuters: Türkiye weighing possible actions if Iran-US conflict erupts
Türkiye is assessing all aspects of potential measures that may be taken in the event of a conflict between its neighbour Iran and the United States, a Turkish diplomatic source told Reuters.
Iran and the United States restarted talks earlier this month while Washington is boosting its military presence in the Middle East. Iran has warned it could target US bases in the region if attacked, yet Tehran's top diplomat said on February 24 that a deal with the US was "within reach" if diplomacy is prioritised.
NATO member Türkiye, bordering Iran to the east, has stated it opposes any military intervention against Iran and seeks to avoid regional destabilisation. Ankara has engaged with both sides to lower tensions and called for a diplomatic resolution of disputes.
"Naturally, all aspects of the measures that could be taken in the event of a negative development are being evaluated," the source said on condition of anonymity.
"All scenarios are being considered, and steps that can be taken to ensure the safety of our citizens are being worked on," the source added, noting that any measures that would "violate Iran's sovereignty" are "out of the question".
The source did not provide specifics on the measures Türkiye is considering.
Earlier, the Turkish presidency's office for countering disinformation denied media reports suggesting Türkiye was planning to enter Iranian territory to prevent a potential refugee influx.
