16 July 2024 18:42

Roberta Metsola has been reelected as President of the European Parliament with resounding support from lawmakers, securing a decisive victory in the July 16 vote.

The election, held during the EU Parliament Plenary Session in Strasbourg, France, saw Metsola, representing the European People's Party (EPP), receive an absolute majority, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Out of 699 votes cast in the closed envelope voting, Metsola garnered 562 votes, solidifying her leadership position for the next five years in the Parliament's 10th legislative term. Her opponent, Spanish MEP Irene Montero of the Left Group, received 61 votes.

In her victory speech, Metsola outlined her vision for a more equitable and inclusive Europe, emphasizing the importance of security, fairness, and justice. She pledged to strengthen Europe's security framework, enhance competitiveness through deepening the single market and concluding global trade deals, and prioritize social welfare and youth investment.

Metsola underscored the need for robust climate action, human-centric migration policies, and advancing digital opportunities while combating discrimination and promoting gender equality.

As President since January 2022, Metsola has been recognized for her advocacy on issues such as the rule of law, environmental sustainability, digital transformation, and gender parity. Her reelection signals confidence in her leadership to navigate the Parliament through future challenges and opportunities.
