Romanian president urges Ukraine, Moldova not to have illusions about early EU accession

01 June 2023 19:54

President of Romania Klaus Iohannis called on the leaders of Moldova and Ukraine not to have illusions about the country's early accession to the EU.

He made the statement during a briefing at the summit of the European political community in Moldova on June 1, TASS reports.

"There should be no illusions, these procedures are very complicated. One may get the impression that they will never end, but these are necessary things. If everyone works hard, this can be achieved in a few years, but look at the Balkans, where there have been ups and downs. I hope that Moldova will remain on a steady rise," the Romanian head said.

According to him, "the summit sends a message about Moldova's importance for the entire continent and the need to help the republic. He also noted signals of support for Ukraine and the strengthening of European security.

"This is a particularly important summit for the entire continent, as well as for the current recently established format. I am sure that the support of democratic states will continue for Moldova, Ukraine and the entire region, strengthening their security, which will also mean strengthening the security of the whole of Europe," stated Iohannis.

The summit of the European political community is taking place in Chisinau on June 1. Fifty European leaders were invited to the event, including Zelenskyy, who arrived in Moldova this morning from Odesa. Newly elected Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and a delegation from San Marino did not attend.
