The trial of Armenian citizen Ruben Vardanyan, accused of crimes against peace and humanity, war crimes, terrorism, financing terrorism, and other serious offenses, continued today.

The open hearing took place at the Baku Military Court, presided over by Judge Zeynal Aghayev, with Judges Anar Rzayev and Jamal Ramazanov, and reserve judge Gunel Samadova, per Azertac.

The defendant was provided with an interpreter in Russian, his native language, and was represented by a lawyer of his own choosing.

During the hearing, the defendant, Ruben Vardanyan, petitioned the court for a confidential meeting with his lawyer, Avraam Berman. The court granted the request, and a short recess was announced.

After the break, Vardanyan submitted another motion, announcing his decision to dismiss his lawyer, Avraam Berman. Explaining his request, Vardanyan stated that he was generally dissatisfied with the court proceedings. For his part, Berman said he would leave it to the court to decide whether to grant or deny the motion.

Senior Assistant to the Prosecutor General Vusal Aliyev stated that although the defendant did not specify a concrete reason for dismissing his lawyer, he has the legal right to do so. However, Aliyev emphasized that, in accordance with the law, a defendant cannot completely forgo legal representation and must either hire another lawyer or be assigned one by the state if lacking the means.

Ruben Vardanyan informed the court that he had not signed a contract with another lawyer and noted that he did not object to being provided with a state-appointed defence attorney.

After deliberation, the court granted Vardanyan’s request to dismiss his lawyer, Avraam Berman. A decision to provide the defendant with a state-appointed lawyer was referred to the Bar Association of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The hearing was adjourned, with the next session scheduled for October 28.
