Russia accuses foreign powers of using "colour revolution" tactics in Iran
Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, criticised years of Western sanctions on Iran, saying they have hindered development and caused economic and social hardship, especially for ordinary Iranians.
In her statement, Zakharova warned that hostile foreign powers are attempting to exploit rising domestic tensions in Iran to destabilise the state, citing what Russia calls the “well-known methods of ‘colour revolutions’” in which peaceful protests are allegedly turned into violent disturbances by foreign-trained provocateurs.
The ministry reaffirmed its condemnation of external interference in Iran’s internal political affairs, highlighting the Iranian government’s stated willingness to engage in constructive dialogue with society to mitigate the negative socio-economic impact of Western policies.
Moscow also rejected any threats emanating from Washington of further military action against Iran. The statement warned that those seeking to use externally inspired unrest as a pretext for repeating acts of aggression against Iran, similar to those in June 2025, must consider the potentially destabilising consequences for the Middle East and international security.
Attempts to pressure Iran’s overseas partners through increased trade tariffs were also described as “unacceptable."
The ministry noted signs of a calming in domestic unrest and the gradual stabilisation of the situation, attributing this to large-scale public demonstrations in support of Iran’s sovereignty. It added that such developments undermine the designs of those opposed to the independent foreign policy of states like Iran.
Finally, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that its diplomatic missions in Iran remain operational and in close contact with Russian nationals in the country, advising them to take sensible precautions, avoid crowds, and comply with local authorities.
