Russia among one of largest LNG suppliers to Spain
Russia has ranked second among natural gas suppliers to Spain in 2024, accounting for 21.3% of Spain's total liquified natural gas (LNG) imports.
New data published by the Spanish energy company Enagás show that Russian gas supplies to Spain amounted to 72,360 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in 2024, Caliber.Az reports. This output closely matches the 2023 level of 72,690 GWh. The report notes that the majority of Russian gas is delivered under long-term contracts with Yamal LNG.
According to the report, Spain's largest supplier of natural gas in 2024 was Algeria, accounting for 38.5% of total imports (131,202 GWh). This represents a 12.8% increase in Algerian gas supplies compared to the previous year.
As Caliber.Az recalls, the figures are published in the midst of energy uncertainty for the European market as Russian gas supplies to Europe have been suspended from January 1, 2025. Back in 2022, following Western sanctions imposed on Russia and European economies racing to reduce their dependence on Russian gas the Yamal-Europe pipeline which flowed through Belarus to Poland closed.
Two others major routes for Russian gas feeding Europe's largest economy, Germany, are also no longer in use following acts of sabotage on the Nord Stream and Nord Stream II pipelines. While the incident is still awaiting a definite investigative conclusion, the only pipeline to Europe remaining was through Ukrainian territory — a legacy of a less divided Europe that no longer exists. Following Ukraine's refusal to extend the transit contract with Russia's Gazprom, the flow of gas was halted indefinitely from the beginning of the year.
