Russia, Iran poised to sign historic agreement

10 September 2024 21:31

Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu has said that Russia is finalising domestic procedures necessary to prepare for the signing of a new foundational interstate treaty with Tehran at the highest level.

During a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS and BRICS+ high-level security representatives' conference, Shoigu met with Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Akbar Ahmadian, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

"We are ready to enhance cooperation through the Security Council. We continue monitoring the practical implementation of agreements reached at the highest level. We anticipate the imminent signing of a new foundational interstate treaty. The finalisation of domestic procedures required to prepare the documents for signing by the presidents of Russia and Iran is underway," Shoigu stated.

He noted that Iran's accession to BRICS has created additional opportunities to enhance the quality of cooperation among its members, aiming to establish a unified and indivisible architecture of strategic security and a fair, multipolar world order.

Shoigu expressed his gratitude to Ahmadian for the warm reception given to the Russian delegation, led by the secretary of the Russian Security Council, during the working visit to Tehran in early August 2024.

"I believe the main topics we discussed will be further developed during tomorrow's plenary session, but today I would like to address several issues related to security and our future work. Welcome to St. Petersburg," he added.
