Turkish, Russian top diplomats engage in telephone talks on Ukraine settlement

07 August 2025 13:55

On August 7, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov to discuss the ongoing efforts toward resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

The dialogue was confirmed by sources within the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

According to the ministry’s sources, the top diplomats focused their discussion on the current status of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, underscoring the importance of diplomatic engagement in seeking a peaceful settlement.

Meanwhile, Yury Ushakov, aide to the Russian president, said that President Vladimir Putin is set to meet with his American counterpart Donald Trump in the coming days. Ushakov confirmed that the location for the high-level meeting has already been agreed upon, though further logistical details have not yet been disclosed.

The anticipated talks follow a recent round of dialogue between President Putin and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Speaking about the outcome, President Trump remarked that "great progress" had been made during those discussions. However, he tempered expectations by noting that he did not view the developments as a definitive breakthrough.

In a further signal of cautious optimism, President Trump has announced a postponement of any immediate decision regarding the imposition of new sanctions on Russia, suggesting that diplomatic momentum may take precedence in the short term.
