Russia questions Armenia’s commitment to bilateral ties
Russia’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova has questioned Armenia’s commitment to maintaining strong relations with Moscow, saying Yerevan’s actions do not align with its public statements.
Speaking at a briefing on May 28, Zakharova said Armenian officials continue to express a desire to preserve ties with Russia, but Moscow is increasingly concerned by Armenia’s recent policy decisions, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
“We hear statements from Armenian officials about Yerevan’s intention to maintain relations with Russia,” Zakharova said. “However, we are accustomed to judging not only by words, but also by deeds. And for some reason, their actions are increasingly at odds with those statements.”
Zakharova stated that Russia does not oppose Armenia expanding its international partnerships, but argued that Yerevan’s current foreign policy approach toward Moscow “can hardly be called balanced.”
Despite the criticism, she stressed that Russia continues to regard Armenia as a close ally and strategic partner in the South Caucasus region.
“We continue to view the republic as our natural partner in the South Caucasus, and we consider the Armenian people to be our brothers,” Zakharova said, adding that Moscow supports peace and stability in Armenia.
