Russia’s Novosibirsk declares “black sky” due to harmful emissions
Authorities in Novosibirsk, Russia, have declared a “black sky” regime due to meteorological conditions that hinder the dispersion of harmful pollutants, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
The West Siberian Hydrometeorological Centre said the regime will remain in effect until the evening of September 19. “Until 6:00 PM (local time), meteorological conditions unfavourable for the dispersion of harmful pollutants in the atmosphere will persist in Novosibirsk and Iskitim. First-degree hazard conditions continue,” the statement said.
Under the “black sky” hazard, smog may form from vehicle exhaust and industrial emissions. Calm weather can lead to a ground-level temperature inversion, causing harmful substances to accumulate near the surface.
City authorities have urged companies whose production involves emissions to reduce output and warned residents to limit outdoor activities and reduce the use of personal vehicles.
