Russia’s security chief in Pyongyang to advance pact with North Korea
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu has arrived in Pyongyang on a special mission from President Vladimir Putin to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, according to the Security Council’s press service.
“Sergei Shoigu arrived in Pyongyang on a special assignment from Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold talks with the DPRK leadership as part of the implementation of agreements reached during his last visit on June 4,” the official statement said, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
These agreements are being implemented within the framework of the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Russia and the DPRK.
During Shoigu’s earlier visit on June 4, he and Kim Jong-un discussed a range of topics, including the further development of bilateral relations, the war in Ukraine, and specific elements of the recently signed Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement.
Shoigu's visit builds on growing cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang under the Strategic Partnership Treaty, which was signed in Pyongyang on June 19, 2024 and ratified by both countries in November.
Previously, on May 28, Shoigu had hosted North Korea’s Minister of State Security Ri Hyon-chol in Moscow. At that meeting, he praised what he described as the “heroic actions” of North Korean military units, which, according to him, had supported Russian forces in the liberation of the Kursk region from the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
