Russia warns of consequences as Iran weighs leaving nuclear treaty
Russia has reacted to Iran's recent statements regarding its potential withdrawal from the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), describing the move as a response to growing threats from Western nations, including discussions of renewed sanctions and possible military action against Iran's nuclear infrastructure.
The Russian Foreign Ministry explained that Iran's comments should be viewed as a warning in light of the increasing pressure from international players, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
"The statements by Iranian representatives should be analyzed and objectively assessed as a warning signal in the context of the threats certain players in the international arena are trying to create for it, including openly discussing military strikes on Iran's nuclear energy infrastructure," the ministry said.
The Russian government expressed hope that those advocating for Iran's expulsion from the NPT would reconsider their approach. "We hope that those who are trying to push Iran out of the NPT will realize their measure of responsibility and reconsider the destructive course they are pursuing," the Foreign Ministry emphasized.
Russia reiterated its steadfast support for the NPT, stressing the importance of strengthening the treaty and promoting its universalization. It also highlighted that Iran has consistently complied with its obligations under the NPT.
"Iran strictly fulfills its obligations under the NPT," the statement read, while acknowledging that Iran faces opposition from certain countries, some of which are eager for Tehran to "slip up." Moscow expressed confidence that such malicious efforts would not succeed.
The comments come amid heightened international tensions surrounding Iran's nuclear program, with Western countries pushing for tougher actions against Tehran in response to its nuclear activities.
