Russian Federation Council speaker in Istanbul for official talks with President Erdoğan

27 February 2025 17:05

Valentina Matviyenko, Speaker of the Federation Council of Russia, is on an official visit to Istanbul, where she is scheduled to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, as confirmed by the Federation Council's press service.

Matviyenko is leading a delegation from the upper house of the Russian Parliament, and the meeting with Erdoğan is expected to focus on various issues of mutual interest between Russia and Türkiye, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.

Meanwhile, following talks with the Speaker of Türkiye's Grand National Assembly, Numan Kurtulmuş, Matviyenko addressed the ongoing situation in the Middle East. She reiterated her belief that the creation of an independent Palestinian state remains the only viable solution for lasting peace in the region.

"We, like Türkiye, believe that the only way to achieve stable peace and stability in the Middle East is to implement the United Nations resolution, which envisions the creation of two sovereign and independent states – Israel and Palestine – living in peace and harmony," Matviyenko stated, emphasising the need for international cooperation in bringing about this resolution.

Moreover, Valentina Matviyenko is set to embark on an official visit to Armenia with the aim of revitalizing interstate relations.

Matviyenko and Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan discussed the details of the visit during a phone conversation, which was initiated by Yerevan. The exact date of the visit has yet to be announced.
