Russian intel claims EU regrets appointing Kaja Kallas over "incompetence"
Brussels is beginning to acknowledge that appointing Kaja Kallas as the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy may have been a mistake, according to a statement released by the press bureau of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR).
"According to information received by the SVR, Brussels is beginning to recognise that it was wrong to appoint K. Kallas to the post of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy," the agency said in a public report, according to Russian media.
The SVR claims that irritation is growing within the European Commission over what it calls Kallas's "absolute incompetence" in her role as the EU’s top foreign policy representative. According to the agency, senior officials in Brussels believe Kallas is unable to grasp the complex nuances of the individual positions held by EU member states. Instead, she is reportedly criticised for relying on oversimplified approaches that "are often devoid of any sense."
As a result of these perceived shortcomings, the SVR claims that Kallas is now being “almost openly” accused — both in Brussels and in the capitals of major EU countries — of exhibiting “excessive activity” and a “tendency to launch spontaneous and uncoordinated initiatives.”
The report further states that within the European Commission, it is broadly concluded that Kallas has failed to establish effective working relationships with the heads of most EU countries. Consequently, the SVR asserts, she is "actually failing in her main job responsibility" — the coordination of foreign policy efforts across EU member states.
Her involvement in discussions surrounding a political settlement of the war in Ukraine has also reportedly diminished. According to the SVR, Kallas’s role in that sphere “has been practically reduced to zero.”
Kaja Kallas was nominated to the post of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in June 2024, following her tenure as Prime Minister of Estonia from 2021 until her resignation in July 2024. Her appointment to the EU’s top diplomatic role was confirmed in November 2024.
