Russian police detain military contractor accused of promoting Nazi ideology
Law enforcement authorities in St. Petersburg have detained a man who worked as a contractor for Russia’s Ministry of Defence on suspicion of publicly calling for extremist activity, according to a source cited by Russian media outlet 78.ru.
The suspect was employed as a truck driver and, as part of his duties, transported personal belongings of military cadets to a laundry facility. Investigators allege that outside of working hours he operated a Telegram channel in which he promoted Nazi ideology and published calls for violence against people from Russia’s North Caucasus republics.
According to the source, the man’s online activity drew the attention of law enforcement agencies, prompting an investigation. Authorities concluded that he had systematically disseminated extremist content on social media, which led to his detention.
The suspect has been charged under Russian law with publicly calling for extremist activity. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of up to five years.
