South Korea conducts military drills near DPRK border Amid heightened tensions
South Korea held military drills night near its border with North Korea, utilizing multiple rocket launchers to demonstrate its readiness to respond to potential provocations.
The exercises took place in Kosong, Gangwon-do province, where the South Korean army deployed Chunmoo MLRSs to strike simulated targets in the sea, located 17 kilometers off the coast, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
“This live-fire drill was conducted to showcase the army's determination and capability to strike back if the enemy engages in provocation,” stated a military spokesperson. The Chunmoo system, equipped with 12 missiles, has a striking range of up to 36 kilometers.
In addition to these drills, the South Korean military announced the commencement of its annual large-scale Hoguk exercises, set to begin on October 20 and continue for nearly three weeks until November 8.
This year's maneuvers are expected to involve more troops and equipment than in previous years and will include participation from US military representatives stationed in South Korea. The drills will focus on realistic scenarios and will account for potential provocations from the DPRK, emphasizing the need for preparedness in a volatile regional security environment.
