Soviet Union collapse still trauma for Russia’s elites, says German minister PHOTO
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said that the collapse of the Soviet Union was a trauma for Russia’s elites, arguing that Moscow has yet to come to terms with it.
In an article for Die Zeit, Pistorius described the “USSR” inscription on a sweater worn by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the Russia–US presidents’ summit in Alaska as an example of revisionism by the Russian authorities, Caliber.Az reports.
“This is a clear global call to confrontation, especially against the United States,” he wrote.

Pistorius said the gesture should be seen not merely as symbolism, but as a warning that Russia’s confrontation with the West extends far beyond Europe.
He argued that the message reflects a broader Russian strategy aimed at ending what Moscow sees as the “American century” and pushing the United States out of Europe through closer alignment with China and Iran.
The minister added that, in light of such sentiments in Russia, US authorities should demonstrate their readiness to adhere to a unified NATO course.
