Syrian security forces arrest Hezbollah cell in Western Damascus countryside PHOTO
On September 11, the Internal Security Directorate in the Damascus countryside announced the arrest of a cell linked to the Lebanese group Hezbollah in the western part of the governorate, following a carefully planned security operation.
Ahmad al-Dalati, head of the Internal Security Directorate in the province, said that specialised units, working in coordination with the General Intelligence Directorate, were able to apprehend the cell after detailed monitoring and intensive fieldwork, Caliber.Az reports, citing Syrian media.
The suspects were operating in the towns of Saasaa and Kanaker.
Initial investigations indicated that the cell members had received training in camps in Lebanon and were planning operations inside Syria that could threaten citizens’ security and stability.
During the operation, security forces seized rocket launchers, 19 Grad rockets, anti-tank missiles, individual firearms, and large quantities of ammunition.
Al-Dallati confirmed that the case has been referred to the relevant authorities to complete legal procedures, while investigations continue to determine the full extent of the cell’s connections and objectives.
The Syrian Interior Ministry released images showing the operation and the weapons and ammunition seized from the Hezbollah-linked cell.
Previous operations
In March, the Syrian Interior Ministry carried out a security campaign targeting Hezbollah cells in the Sayyidah Zainab area of the Damascus countryside, resulting in the arrest of several individuals.
The ministry said the cells had been planning criminal operations before they were detained.
