Tehran says new missile bypassed Israeli-US defence systems in targeted strike

17 June 2025 14:40

Iran’s Defence Ministry has claimed that the recent missile strike against an Israeli intelligence and security centre demonstrates what it described as the growing strategic and technological superiority of Iranian armed forces.

Speaking on state television, Brigadier General Alireza Talaei-Nik, spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, characterised the ongoing conflict with Israel as an “imposed war,” arguing that Iran has no choice but to respond defensively, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.

However, he said the country is also using its offensive capabilities where necessary.

"The war has been imposed on us, but it places us firmly in a defensive posture,” he stated. “Nevertheless, we are making full use of our offensive capacities against the enemy."

General Talaei-Nik said the recent operation by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted a key Israeli intelligence facility with a precision-guided missile, bypassing multiple layers of air defences—reportedly supported by the United States. He described the successful hit as a sign of Israel’s weakening military posture.

Iran also unveiled a new domestically developed missile, reportedly used in combat for the first time. Talaei-Nik claimed the missile was undetected by enemy radar systems, and said the country’s defence industry has equipped the military with advanced weapons in anticipation of Israeli actions.

He further asserted that the resilience of the “Zionist regime” would gradually erode under continued pressure, while also promising more “surprises” from Iran’s armed forces soon.

“This conflict includes both hard and soft warfare,” he said. “In the domain of hard warfare, our armed forces are responding with strength, and the enemy is now acutely aware of its vulnerabilities. Strategically, the Zionist regime cannot sustain a prolonged conflict—it will eventually collapse.”

On June 16, Iranian missiles struck the Israeli cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa, causing significant damage to residential areas.

Multiple explosions were reported as homes and infrastructure were hit, with emergency services responding swiftly to the scenes. Initial reports suggest dozens of casualties, though official figures are yet to be confirmed.
