Thailand records 77 aftershocks following Myanmar earthquake
Thailand's Meteorological Department has reported 77 aftershocks following a powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar's Sagaing fault region.
The aftershocks, which ranged in magnitude from 2.4 to 7.1 on the Richter scale, were recorded up until 06:00 on March 29. While most of these tremors went unnoticed in many parts of Thailand, they were a significant result of the initial quake that struck Myanmar on March 28, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The original earthquake, which measured 8.2 on the Richter scale (7.7 on the moment magnitude scale), occurred at 1:20 PM local time on March 28, approximately 1,100 kilometers from Bangkok. The quake's epicenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers under Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city.
The strong tremor was felt across Thailand, particularly in the central region, including the capital, Bangkok. Due to the area's soft soil, shockwaves slowed down as they passed through the clay beneath the city, amplifying the tremors and making them more intense in the capital.
In addition to the aftershocks, a tremor of magnitude 4.1 was detected in Mae Hong Son province on the March 28 night, caused by activity along the Wiang Haeng fault near the Thai-Myanmar border. The tremor was felt in Wiang Tai sub-district, though no damage has been reported so far.
Damage from the original earthquake has been reported across 11 provinces in Thailand, but authorities continue to monitor the situation.
