Top US intel official: Gaza conflict serves as recruitment tool for terror groups
Brett Holmgren, assistant secretary of state for intelligence and research has cautioned that the conflict in Gaza is fueling recruitment efforts by terrorist groups and inspiring "lone actors" who are angered by the United States' strong support for Israel.
The top intelligence official at the State Department described the Hamas-led assault on Israel starting October 7 as a significant event that terrorist organizations globally are using to recruit members, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.
He highlighted instances in Europe where individuals have been arrested for plotting attacks on Jewish sites.
Holmgren's remarks come as he prepares to take on the role of acting director of the National Counterterrorism Center later this month. He emphasized the importance of assessing factors beyond military capabilities when evaluating conflicts, pointing to Ukraine as an example.
In his new role, Holmgren will oversee a team responsible for maintaining a database on terrorists and sharing intelligence from both domestic and international sources.
Regarding criticism of US support for Israel amid the Gaza conflict, Holmgren acknowledged the real sentiments on the ground and the impact on perceptions of the United States in the region and among Muslim countries.
