Trump praises military response in Los Angeles, criticises governor Newsom

US President Donald Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to comment on the recent unrest in Los Angeles, claiming credit for restoring order in the city.

In his post, Trump said Los Angeles had been “safe and sound for the last two nights” due to the deployment of the National Guard and support from the US Marines. He praised the coordination between the military forces and the Los Angeles Police Department, stating that the intervention allowed local authorities to “effectively do their job,” Caliber.Az reports. 

“Without the Military, Los Angeles would be a crime scene like we haven’t seen in years,” Trump asserted.

He also directed sharp criticism at California Governor Gavin Newsom—whom he mockingly referred to as “Gaven NewScum”—accusing him of losing control of the situation. Trump claimed the governor should be thanking federal forces for stepping in, instead of “trying to justify his mistakes and incompetence.”

Protests have entered their sixth consecutive day in Los Angeles, with tensions escalating over ongoing ICE raids and the deployment of US military personnel in the city. Downtown Los Angeles remains under curfew for a second night as demonstrators continue to rally against the federal immigration crackdown and the presence of troops.

Similar protests have erupted in cities across the United States, including New York, Seattle, Chicago, Austin, Las Vegas, and Washington, D.C. In Spokane, Washington, the mayor declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew after demonstrators blocked key roads in response to ICE operations.

USNorthern Command confirmed that 700 Marines mobilised to the Los Angeles area have completed their training and are expected to be deployed within the next 48 hours. Meanwhile, a legal hearing is scheduled for June 12 to address California’s efforts to limit the Trump administration’s authority to use federal troops and National Guard forces within the state.

The wave of nationwide protests was partly triggered by the June 6 arrest of David Huerta, president of SEIU California and SEIU-USWW. Huerta was detained by federal agents while monitoring an ICE raid in Los Angeles. He sustained injuries during the arrest, was hospitalised, and later released. His treatment has drawn widespread condemnation from labour unions and immigrant rights groups, prompting solidarity demonstrations across the country.
