Trump sued over executive order easing firing of federal workers

President Donald Trump has been sued over an executive order that would simplify the process for firing high-level civil service employees.

The National Treasury Employees Union, which represents US government employees across 37 agencies and departments, filed the lawsuit in Washington federal court, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.

The union argues that Trump’s move undermines the intent of Congress, which established “due process rights” for federal career employees.

“The Executive Order will radically reshape the civil service by drastically increasing the number and type of employees who are in a new category of excepted service and be at risk of dismissal without adverse action rights,” according to the lawsuit.

The White House press office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

This legal challenge is part of what is expected to be a broader wave of litigation in response to Trump’s executive actions following his inauguration. A lawsuit has already been filed in response to Trump’s attempt to end automatic citizenship for children born in the US to parents who are unlawfully or temporarily in the country. Additionally, a union representing hundreds of thousands of federal employees has sued the administration over its signature cost-cutting initiatives, led by billionaire Elon Musk.

Trump’s order reinstates one he issued shortly before losing the 2020 presidential election, which removes some civil service protections by creating a new category of federal workers known as “Schedule F.” Former President Joe Biden revoked the order on his third day in office, before it could take effect. The 2020 order had also faced legal challenges from public employee unions.
