Turkish official: Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway has potential to extend as far as London
The Baku–Tbilisi–Kars (BTK) railway is emerging as a key segment of the transport corridor linking China and Europe, with potential to extend as far as London, Türkiye’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu said.
Speaking on the significance of regional connectivity projects, Uraloğlu said the railway is expected to handle up to 5 million tons of cargo annually, contributing to the economic development of countries along the route, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
He added that recent disruptions in global maritime transport have increased the strategic importance of overland trade routes, particularly the BTK railway, which connects Azerbaijan, Georgia and Türkiye as part of broader Eurasian logistics networks.
The minister said the corridor could play a growing role in facilitating faster and more resilient freight movement between Asia and Europe, as governments and businesses seek to diversify supply chains and reduce reliance on sea routes.
