Türkiye eyes balanced policy with Russia if it joins BRICS, analyst says
Türkiye is poised to adopt a balanced foreign policy similar to its interactions with the Russian Federation if it becomes a member of BRICS, according to economic commentator and journalist Taylan Büyükşahin.
Büyükşahin emphasized that using BRICS membership as a lever for political pressure is currently not feasible. Instead, he suggested that Türkiye would maintain a balanced stance, akin to its relationship with Moscow, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
In light of potential pressure from the United States, Büyükşahin pointed out that Washington already enjoys stable economic ties with BRICS nations.
“I don’t think there will be any significant issues here. Only certain regulations may be introduced concerning duty-free trade. There may be rules regarding goods moving from BRICS countries to Türkiye and then on to Europe. These are not the types of details that would create problems,” he stated.
In early September, it was revealed that Türkiye had officially submitted an application to join BRICS. Bloomberg sources clarified that Türkiye's decision to pursue membership came several months ago, following unsuccessful negotiations to join the European Union, of which it has been a candidate since 1999.
