Turkiye: None of parties to Ukraine conflict making significant progress

31 May 2022 14:51

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavushoglu has said that none of the parties to the conflict in Ukraine is making significant progress and that arms supplies to Ukraine will not help stop the hostilities.

The minister is convinced that a quick victory cannot be achieved by force. He believes that there is again a "trend towards dialogue" between Moscow and Kyiv. Ankara has also once again confirmed that it will not participate in Western sanctions, Kommersant informs.

According to Cavushoglu, a number of countries were of the opinion that with the help of arms supplies, Ukraine would be able to reverse the course of hostilities and "defeat Russia".

"This is not happening. Neither side is gaining significant success on the battlefield," the minister said.

He claims that recently "there has been a new trend towards dialogue" between Moscow and Kyiv.

Mevlut Cavushoglu stressed that Ankara is also in favour of dialogue, since "the costs of the war, especially for Ukraine, are very high".

"Turkiye seeks to restore face-to-face talks between Russia and Ukraine, including at the level of heads of state," the minister added.

Speaking about the anti-Russian sanctions, Cavushoglu said that Turkiye supports only restrictions at the UN level.

"We support only those sanctions that are imposed at the UN level," he stressed.
