Türkiye’s head coach admits tactical mistakes after Australia defeat
Vincenzo Montella, the head coach of our Turkish National Football Team, admitted that his side failed to execute their tactical plan following Türkiye’s 2-0 defeat to Australia in their opening Group D match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The coach acknowledged that the team did not perform as expected, Caliber.Az reports per Turkish media.
“The game didn't go unexpectedly in tactical terms. We knew they would stay back and wait. They also used counterattacks. We conceded two goals, and we are very sorry.
We reflected the team spirit on the pitch and played with heart. If we continue like this, we will start getting the results we want. We will do better in the next match,” Montella said.
The match ended with Australia winning 2–0, with goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe.
Türkiye will face Paraguay in their second group-stage match on June 20 and will conclude their group campaign against the United States on June 26.
