The ministry reported that 13 PKK/YPG terrorists were identified and eliminated in the regions of Euphrates Shield and Peace Spring in northern Syria. Additionally, two PKK terrorists were neutralized in the Gara region of northern Iraq.
Note that, the term "neutralize" is used by Turkish authorities to describe the killing, capture, or surrender of terrorists.
The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) frequently uses northern Iraq as a base to plan cross-border attacks on Türkiye. In response, Türkiye launched Operation Claw-Lock in 2022, focusing on PKK hideouts in northern Iraq’s Metina, Zap, and Avasin-Basyan regions.
In northern Syria, Türkiye has conducted several successful anti-terror operations since 2016, including Euphrates Shield (2016), Olive Branch (2018), and Peace Spring (2019). These operations aimed to prevent the establishment of a terror corridor and ensure the peaceful settlement of local populations.
The PKK, which has waged a violent insurgency against Türkiye for over four decades, is designated as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union. The People’s Defence Units (YPG) is the Syrian affiliate of the PKK.
Following the collapse of the Assad regime, the PKK/YPG has attempted to exploit regional instability to establish a “terror corridor” along Türkiye’s southern border.
