Türkiye signals readiness to support Syria militarily amid rising tensions
Türkiye is closely monitoring Israel’s bombardment of Syrian cities, which it says is being carried out under the pretext of protecting the Druze population.
According to Yeni Şafak, while Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organisation (MIT) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs played a role in brokering a “ceasefire” between Damascus and Druze factions in As-Suwayda, the Ministry of National Defence has issued a significant statement.
Sources within the ministry said: “Türkiye is ready to strengthen Syria’s defence capabilities and support its fight against terrorism upon request.”
In July 2025, intense clashes erupted in Syria’s Suwayda province between Druze militias and Sunni Bedouin tribes, resulting in significant casualties and escalating sectarian tensions. The Syrian government’s involvement, siding with Bedouin groups, further fueled unrest. Israel conducted airstrikes in southern Syria, claiming to protect the Druze population, which drew regional and international reactions.
A ceasefire was brokered around mid-July, with Syrian forces withdrawing and local Druze leaders assuming greater security responsibilities. Türkiye played a key diplomatic role in mediating the truce, coordinating with Syrian, Druze, and regional actors to stabilise the volatile situation.
