Two people were killed after a cargo plane skidded off the runway into the sea during landing at Hong Kong International Airport early Monday morning.
Flight EK9788 operated by Emirates and flown by ACT Airlines was arriving from Dubai at around 3:50 a.m. local time (7:50 p.m. GMT) when it collided with an airport security vehicle on the runway and plunged into the water, The Telegraph reports.
Stephen Yu, Chief Operating Officer of the airport, said at a press conference that two airport security staff members died after “the aircraft struck a patrol vehicle and pushed it into the sea.”
A 30-year-old man died at the scene, while a 41-year-old man succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital.
All four crew members on board the plane were rescued and taken to the hospital.
Reports indicate the plane was attempting to land under severe weather conditions.
Helicopters from the Government Flying Service and vessels from the Fire Services Department were deployed to the crash site.
