UN continues support for Azerbaijan's demining efforts in Karabakh region

17 April 2024 17:48

Acting Resident Representative of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in Azerbaijan, Alessandra Roccasalvo, has affirmed the UN's commitment to supporting Azerbaijan in its demining efforts, particularly in the Karabakh region.

"Our goal is to build a world free of mine threats," Roccasalvo told Report, emphasizing the severity of the mine and explosive contamination in the Karabakh region. She highlighted the ongoing efforts of the UNDP to bolster the institutional and operational capacities of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA).

The support provided by UNDP includes various aspects such as programmatic assistance, technical expertise, and resource mobilization. Roccasalvo noted that these efforts encompass initiatives such as mine risk education, the training of the first female deminers, and plans for the demining of 100,000 hectares of land. Additionally, over 176,000 individuals have participated in mine action programs.

Expressing the UNDP's overarching goal of achieving a world free of mine threats, Roccasalvo urged all states to accede to and adhere to the Mine Ban Convention.

"In post-conflict scenarios, it is imperative for parties to share available information and provide maps of minefields," she emphasized. This transparency aids in facilitating the demining process, preventing further mine casualties, and enabling the return of displaced persons to normal life in affected territories.

Roccasalvo highlighted the challenges posed by the lack of detailed information on mine sites, particularly hindering the safe return of thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to the Karabakh region.

“Continuing its support for the government of Azerbaijan and ANAMA, the UNDP is actively involved in developing effective and cost-efficient demining methods. This includes the utilization of artificial intelligence and visual imagery to expand demining capabilities and enhance the efficiency of operations,” the UNDP Acting Resident added.
