US ambassador concerned by Georgian authorities' labeling of US, EU as enemies
US Ambassador to Georgia Robin Dunigan expressed concern about the strained partnership between the US and Georgia, highlighting that some Georgian officials have portrayed the US and the EU as adversaries.
In an interview with Georgian media cited by Caliber.Az, Dunigan emphasized the extensive network of partnerships that the US has cultivated in Georgia, encompassing various areas of assistance.
"We've built a significant partnership in this country, and Secretary Blinken has clearly stated that all this assistance is unfortunately at risk. We don't want that to happen. However, maintaining a strong partnership becomes very challenging if certain members of the Georgian authorities view us as enemies," Dunigan stated.
She underscored the collaborative efforts between the US and EU in supporting various sectors in Georgia, such as aiding people with disabilities, families of children with Down syndrome, hospital staff, and schools in minority communities. Dunigan also highlighted US contributions to Georgia's Defence Forces, Coast Guard training and equipment, and irrigation system development.
Previously, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a comprehensive review of bilateral cooperation with Georgia following the enactment of Georgia's Foreign Agents Act, which included new visa policy restrictions. In response, Georgia's ruling party criticized the US decision as unprecedented and characterized it as inconsistent with the spirit of strategic partnership. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze later acknowledged the need for a reassessment and restoration of relations between the two countries.
