US military abruptly withdraws from two key bases in eastern Syria
In a sudden and unexpected move, US military forces have withdrawn from two significant bases located in the eastern part of Syria’s Deir ez-Zor province, within areas controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), linked to the PKK/YPG terrorist organisation.
The withdrawal began on May 18 but notably accelerated over the past 48 hours, Caliber.Az reports, citing Syrian media.
The US military convoys involved in the pullout included armored vehicles and extensive logistical equipment.
The two bases, situated near the strategically vital Al-Omar oil field and the Conoco gas field, have long been focal points of tension, having suffered repeated attacks from pro-Iranian militias. These energy-rich sites have played a crucial role in the region’s complex geopolitical landscape.
Following the departure of American troops, control of both facilities was immediately assumed by SDF forces, further consolidating their presence in the region.
