Vienna, Berlin and Budapest opposed the embargo on Russian gas
Vienna, Berlin and Budapest oppose the Russian gas embargo. This was stated by Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer on CNN.
“Austria is not alone in this issue against the gas embargo. On the other hand, Austria is on the side of other EU member states and on the side of sanctions against Russia. But the sanctions should hit Russia harder than the EU,” he said.
According to the chancellor, the European Commission and the Council of the EU are already discussing a ban on oil supplies, but gas is a separate issue, since the industry of different countries depends on it.
“You know, the European Union has decided that we should try to do everything to end dependence on Russian gas, Austria also wants this, of course. But now it is impossible. It will take time,” Nehammer added.
The Austrian Chancellor visited Moscow on April 11 and held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting was held behind closed doors from the press. Later, the head of the opposition Austrian Freedom Party, Herbert Kickl, reproached Nehammer for not addressing the issue of energy supply.
