Von der Leyen: Europe has “precise plans” to send troops to Ukraine
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that EU countries are working on “pretty precise plans” regarding the potential deployment of military forces in Ukraine as part of security guarantees after the war ends. These security guarantees will be fully backed by U.S. commitments.
According to the Financial Times, she noted that each country will make its own decision about sending troops.
“President Trump reassured us that there will be [an] American presence as part of the backstop,” she said. “That was very clear and repeatedly affirmed.”
The forces could potentially include tens of thousands of troops under European leadership, supported by the U.S., particularly with command and control systems, as well as intelligence and surveillance assets.
“After any peace deal, Kyiv would need quite a sizeable number of soldiers and they need good salaries and of course, modern equipment . . . it’s for sure the EU that will have to chip in,” she emphasised.
Von der Leyen did not provide details, noting only that discussions on security guarantees are going “very well.”
